Hair Extensions 101
Hair extensions indeed offer a wide range of luxurious possibilities for those looking to enhance the length, volume, and fullness of their hair. They are particularly beneficial for individuals with thinning hair or those who simply want to change their hairstyle without waiting for their natural hair to grow. Here's an overview of some of the most popular methods of hair extension installation:
This method is usually suitable for most people because of the way they are applied. The application method allows for a seamless look whether the hair is worn up or down.
Sew-In Extensions/Wefts
These are bonded to natural hair using different adhesives such as keratin and glue. The extensions are bonded to the hair using a machine similar to a hot glue gun, which is why this method is also called hot fusion. There is also a cold fusion method that does not require heat. These extensions can last up to 4-6 months with proper maintenance.
Fusion & Pre-Bonded Extensions
These extensions are pre-taped and then taped/glued together on either side of the wearer's hair. A hairdresser typically applies these because they need to align with the roots and are applied with a heated tool that heats up the glue. They need to be re-applied every 4-8 weeks as the hair grows.
Tape-In Extensions
These are temporary hair extensions that can be clipped into the hair as needed and removed at the end of the day. They are great for special occasions or for those who want to change their look frequently without commitment.
Clip-In Extensions
These extensions are also known as micro-bead or loop extensions. They are applied by attaching tiny wefts of hair to small sections of the natural hair with a small silicone-lined bead. Then, a special tool is used to secure the bead to the hair and hold it in place. They can last up to four months but need to be moved up as the natural hair grows and the micro-beads move away from the scalp.
Micro-Link Extensions
These are a newer type of extension that does not attach to your hair at all. Instead, they sit on your head, secured by a thin wire, and are hidden by your natural hair. They are incredibly easy to apply and remove and cause no damage to your hair.

Additionally, proper maintenance is CRUCIAL for the longevity of hair extensions, including regular washing, conditioning, and gentle styling. It's also vital to have them installed and removed by a professional to minimize the risk of damage to your natural hair.
